Western States FASTR study
In 2022, program director Dr. Emily Kraus created FASTR: Female Athlete Science and Translational Research. They are a group of dedicated professionals who not only conduct, but translate findings beyond the science community to the screens and minds of coaches, parents, and athletes. Their goal is to empower young athletes with knowledge that keeps them healthy and active throughout their athletic career and beyond. In the summer of 2024, FASTR’s team completed two studies that took part during the Western States 100-mi run. Per Dr. Kraus, they “sought to address the underrepresentation of girls and women in sports medicine and exercise science research. There is a lack of high quality science that can negatively impact athletic performance, health, injury rates, and quite possibly longevity in sport. I believe we all have a role in creating an equitable environment for all athletes (and humans). That change starts now”.
