Bone Health in the High for Adolescent Runners
My very first educational talk to the community was in Missoula, Montana, during PT school. Alongside both Dr. Rich Willy and my fellow classmate and now amazing DPT at Endurance Physio, Evie Tate, we spoke on the benefits of both strength and plyometric training for the endurance athlete, particularly for high schoolers. Missoula is a town full of extremely fast athletes of all ages, but unfortunately it too follows the pattern of early-burnout and an increase in bone stress injuries (or BSIs) among high school cross country runners. I have seen this trend across counties, and it is the work that Dr. Willy and countless others are doing that brings to light how coaches, healthcare providers, and parents, can make a difference in the trajectory of the high school running athlete.
